Facilities
Facilities change as the puppies grow. (Scroll through photos above to observe.)
When momma dog starts her labor, we quickly move her to the whelping pen. She will give birth there and nurse the puppies for a while. And momma will spend most of her time there in the first few days, taking breaks to go potty, eat, and drink.

As the puppies grow, their spaces get bigger and taller. We create both indoor and outdoor areas for the puppies. Indoor is for playing on their own, sleeping, and nursing. We extend the pen by adding a compartment. Outdoor is mainly for playing, eating (when solid food ready), and potty. Having a way for momma to get in while keeping puppies from getting out is a challenge. And play things (steps, toys, balance beams) are always helpful, even though cardboard boxes prove to be their favorite.
Of course, when supervised (and not outnumbered, lol) we provide the puppies plenty of opportunities to run free around our yard and within our home.
